Build an agent that operates an app with no API over VNC, looking at the screen the way a person would.
Challenge 2, "The agent that operates what has no API": a 15-year-old system with no API. The agent gets a task in natural language and carries it out in an app it has never seen, only through the screen (1280×800 VNC). Practice was on SIGECOM and evaluation on a different app, with 5 minutes per task. The traps: a 1 s repaint, clicks under 100 ms that get ignored, and text that concatenates.
Frontier · CDMX 26, powered by Lab10, was an in-person hackathon on Saturday, October 31, 2026 in Mexico City, for strong technical talent in the region. The challenge resembles AI labs' hiring processes: hidden tests, an individual scorecard, companies hiring, more than US$8,000 in prizes and teams of 1 or 2.
The idea in one sentence: the LLM thinks each step; the loop puts it to work, watches it and stops it. "Deterministic first, the LLM only decides": code validates every decision and counts everything, and the agent always acts by text, never by coordinates.
I used Claude Code for much of the code. I defined the architecture, the rules and the priorities, reviewed and deployed.
On the practice app the agent solved everything I asked, even after the app changed versions in the middle of the afternoon.
In the evaluation the agent worked on a different app, with tasks it had never seen. That is where it fell short.
I am not hiding it: it is the most useful data point of the day. The agent knew how to do the work, just not in time.
I arrived with doubts, took part on my own, did not win and learned a ton. I applied with 8 open questions in English and got approved in two days; nobody got in on their CV.
I made new friends. I talked through the challenge, cleared up doubts and moved forward thanks to them. Friends I met there took 1st and 2nd place.
I wrote about it more calmly on the blog:
The screenshots come from the practice app, with fictitious data.
